Fallen Hero Honored

AMERICAN LEGION POST 16 COSTA RICA
SFC RAYMOND EDISON JONES, JR.
Department of Mexico
Heredia, Costa Rica

Post Name

The Post was chartered on 4 December 1989. At the Post General Meeting, 13 April 2004, the members signed the application to form a non-profit Association as per the laws of Costa Rica. Again, at the Post General Meeting, 11 May 2004, the members agreed to add to the Post Name that of Sergeant Raymond Edison Jones, Jr., who was recently killed in Iraq. This decision was deemed to be very appropriate because Sergeant Jones is of Costa Rican parentage. His mother still lives in Costa Rica. An U.S. Army soldier from Gainesville, Florida killed in Iraq believed in the military and "tried to do everything right," his father said. Army Sergeant First Class Raymond Edison Jones Jr., 31, was killed near Bayji, Iraq, on April 9, 2004, in a rocket-propelled grenade attack. He entered the Army in November 1991 and was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in Schweinfurt, Germany.
Sergeant First Class Raymond Edison Jones Jr. was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Sergeant First Class Jones is survived by three younger brothers: Michael E. Jones, an insurance investigator in Orlando, Florida; and Kurt Douglas Jones and Erick Roger Jones, who both live with their remarried mother, Olga Marta Chavez Smith, in Costa Rica. His widow, Katia, was born in Germany. He had a daughter from a previous marriage. His father, Raymond Edison Jones Sr, lives in Miami.

Army presents new Retired Soldier’s Pin
to CSA Retiree Council members
THE PENTAGON, Washington, DC - Fourteen Retired Soldiers were presented with the new Army Retired Soldier’s Pin at a special ceremony April 25th. The Honorable Ronald James, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, presented the new pin to the 14 members of the Chief of Staff Army (CSA) Retiree Council who have been called to active duty at the Pentagon for their annual meeting. The Council was responsible for the pin’s redesign.
The new pin combines the Army logo with word “retired” emblazoned above. It replaces a smaller, green lapel pin. The pin’s design and size ensure that both the pin and the lifelong bond between Retired Soldier and Army are easily recognized.
“The redesigned pin symbolizes the enduring bond between the Army and the Nation and underscores the Army motto: I was a Soldier; I am a Soldier; I will always be a Soldier,” said James. “The Army could not exist without the brave men and women who choose a life of service. Our Retired Soldiers are a national treasure; we should honor them accordingly,” he added.
The redesign was the recommendation of the CSA Retiree Council whose mission is to advocate for policies and programs that affect quality of life for Retired Soldiers. Currently there are more than 780,000 retired Soldiers worldwide. The larger, bolder pin more clearly identifies the Retired Soldier and more closely associates Retired Soldiers with the Army.
The CSA Retiree Council is made up of seven retired officers and seven retired NCOs and is co-chaired by a retired general officer and a retired senior NCO. Current Co-Chairmen are retired LTG Frederick Vollrath and retired Sergeant Major of the Army Jack Tilley. Prospective members are nominated by their installation retiree councils and approved by the CSA. At its annual meeting, the CSA Retiree Council reviews issues forwarded by installation councils and determines which are most significant Armywide and then forwards them to the CSA for his review.

AAFES special ‘Still Serving’ catalog planned for retirees
DALLAS – Retirees, mark your calendars for the weekend of September 28th for a special event and savings just for retirees. In conjunction with its annual “Still Serving” event that weekend, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) is creating a special catalog geared specifically to the unique needs of military retirees.
Scheduled to hit mailboxes in mid-September, this first-time, 24-page issue will include special “Still Serving” weekend sales and sweepstakes, select merchandise available through the Exchange Catalog or Exchange Online Store, exchange benefits information, as well as an invitation from the AAFES Commander to attend special activities at BXs and PXs worldwide.
“At more than 2 million, retirees account for approximately 40 percent of AAFES’ 5.9 million authorized households, the most of any group,” said AAFES’ Senior Enlisted Advisor Chief Master Sgt. Bryan Eaton. “The new catalog, combined with annual “Still Serving” events, should create plenty of incentive for retirees to come out and take advantage of their exchange benefit.”
AAFES’ annual salute to retirees, featuring unique specials and events, will take place Friday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, at BXs and PXs throughout CONUS, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam, as well as participating European and Pacific locations. Planned events during the weekend will include drawings, free refreshments, product samples, vendor demonstrations, door prizes, makeovers, fashion shows and much more. You can learn more about activities planned at your exchange by calling your local store. You can find contact information for your store at http://www.aafes.com by clicking “store locator” at the top of the page and logging in. When visiting the site, check out the “After Serving: Next Chapter” section.
