Gayle Madeira and Sidney Grant, the 2011 USA Tango Champions, will teach and perform Argentine tango on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, 2012 in the first full event of the new Saugerties Performing Arts Factory in Saugerties New York. They will also teach a men’s and women’s tango technique workshop on Sunday, April 29 from 2-3:30pm at the Mountain View Studio in Woodstock, New York. The Saugerties Performing Arts Factory is a newly renovated 21,000 square foot facility intended to place “all the arts under one roof.” The opening weekend on April 20-22 drew hundreds of patrons and included theater, music, art and dance showcases.

For the events on Saturday, April 28st, there will be an absolute beginners class at 7pm, no partner or experience necessary, followed by an 8pm intermediate class, also no partner necessary but some tango experience with Argentine Tango is required. Woodstock Tango’s popular Milonga Bohemia (Argentine Tango Social Dance) will begin at 9pm and will include a performance by Gayle and Sid around 11pm.

The tango DJ for Milonga Bohemia will be La Rubia De Norte who will play classic and nuevo tango with interludes of latin and swing. Admission is $ 15 for the night, $ 10 for students with ID and senior citizens over 65.

Gayle Gibbons Madeira is an award-winning painter, dancer and choreographer based in New York City. His passion for partner dancing has enabled him to build a worldwide clientele, including choreographing hundreds of wedding couples’ first dances. He was valedictorian in the School of Journalism and Communication at Rutgers College, where he minored in Spanish.

Mobile Homeless Homes Flyer

“Homelessness is a great American tragedy. Our financial system and government have let us down and we, together, must take a stand to change the way the system works. With over 11 million homes underwater and millions in foreclosure, people are frightened, distressed and angry,” says Joey Skaggs.

Although not a cure, Mobile Homeless Homes (MHH) offers a temporary solution — low cost alternative living spaces for the millions of upside-down, underwater or foreclosed homeowners who have lost their houses due to the banking crisis that caused the real estate collapse. The MHH centerpiece is a camouflage, stealth, mobile home made from a series of connected plastic garbage cans, propelled by a tricycle, that will be undetectable by authorities. It blends into any urban environment.

This trojan house was designed by artist Joey Skaggs. “I’ve created this to focus attention on the disastrous effects of government deregulation on the welfare of the general public and to underscore the fact that people are not powerless to create change; that people should not be afraid to use their First Amendment rights to denounce actions they believe are unethical and criminal,” says Skaggs.

On Monday, April 23, 2012 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at 287 Spring Street (between Varick and Hudson) in New York City, Skaggs will parade his Mobile Homeless Homes prototype down to Goldman Sachs. He will be accompanied by his troupe of costumed muppets including the Fresh Juice Party band, performing their original “Mobile Homeless Blues” ballad (lyrics). They will head from Spring Street to West Street and then down West Street to Goldman Sachs at 200 West Street. Other targeted sites will be announced at a later date on the MHH website.

Goldman Sachs has been selected as the destination for the MHH debut. The muppets are there to help hold them accountable, because Goldman Sachs employees commonly have disrespectfully referred to their clients as muppets. The word muppet in British slang is a derogatory term commonly used to mean idiot or loser.

“I’m not a bank regulator. I’m not a legislator. I’m not a politician. I’m an artist. I believe it’s my responsibility to do what I can to bring attention to the issues and inspire our lawmakers to make the critically necessary changes to protect the public from greed and fraud,” says Joey Skaggs.

The MHH performance has been designed to be a fully legal public expression of individual rights. With the current rash of arrests of Occupy Wall Street protestors and the forcible removal of personal belongings from people sitting peacefully in parks, Skaggs says the MHH procession will be on the move at all times, except when waiting for street lights to change. And, since Mayor Bloomberg just the other day kissed Ms Piggy and announced that the Muppets (of Sesame Street fame) are now the official New York City family ambassadors, it might prove embarrassing if the police arrest Ms. Piggy as she exercises her First Amendment rights.

Alluvion Stage Company brings “Peter Pan” to life on the stage of Tower Theater for the first time at Liberty University. The show is Alluvion’s debut production and opens Friday, April 13, and with no shortage of magic, swashbuckling adventure, and singing and dancing, the show is sure to be a hit for viewers of all ages.

Alluvion is a professional stage company, distinct from Liberty’s Department of Theatre Arts, and seeks to enrich, educate and entertain the Lynchburg community by providing a superior theatre experience in a wholesome family environment. “Peter Pan” follows the adventures of the Darling children – Wendy, John and Michael – who discover Peter Pan, a real-life version of Wendy’s bedtime story hero, in their nursery. Pan is a boy who can fly and hails from Neverland, an enchanted place where children never grow up.

With the help of pixie dust and happy thoughts, Pan teaches the children to fly and leads them to Neverland where they encounter mermaids, Indians, wild animals and pirates, none as terrible as the villain Captain Hook.

Director Linda Nell Cooper, chair of Liberty’s Department of Theatre Arts, said with all of the fighting and flying in a mystical world, bringing the fantasy to life requires stunts, choreography and concepts never-before-seen at Liberty.

The imaginative, original concept features a complex, multi-level set and unique costumes, all designed and constructed by Alluvion’s production team.

“It is an original scenic design – making it appear as a whimsical Neverland. All of the costumes are original, made for each individual actor,” Cooper said.

To give life to the magic, Alluvion brought in Flying by Foy: “the most prolific and widely-respected theatrical flying service in the world.” Flight director David Hearn, who designed the flight for Liberty’s show, has multiple Broadway credits, including flying actress Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan.

“It’s a challenge when you have multiple people in the air. It has to be this well-timed out, choreographed event in the sky,” Cooper said of her reason for contracting Flying by Foy.

Students interested in being on a flight team are gaining valuable experience while working with the best in the business. A team of 12 students will operate the wires during the show.

Cooper added that acting in “Peter Pan” presents its own unique set of challenges, as 18-20 year-olds will be portraying children and are required to be skilled in dance, combat and vocals – both in singing and acting.

“It really takes a cast of triple-threats,” Cooper said.

She explained the part of Peter Pan, played by senior Caleb Hughes, is extremely strenuous. Hughes only leaves the stage twice during the three-act play and must transition from one big dance sequence to the next, all the while singing in the upper range of his male voice and performing stylized combat.

“This is the most challenging role I have ever done,” Hughes said. “Not because of one single aspect, but because there is so much going on. You have flying and fighting and choreography, as well as the acting and getting into character. Also vocally, it’s a pretty demanding role. All of that combined, it’s pretty tiring.”

Cooper also said that the set is very complex and has very little flat space, making it difficult to choreograph the dance and fight scenes.

To help prepare the cast for the complex dance sequences, Alluvion hired a professional choreographer, Liberty alumna Courtney Landwerlen (‘11).

“I have really enjoyed the fusing of the alumni with the students and how that was such an easy embrace in coming together,” Cooper said. “Theatre is about collaboration. Artists can come from different places in the country, different generations, and as soon as we step on that stage, we have a camaraderie, and we are all working towards one goal.”

Cooper added that not only does Alluvion give students professional credits on their résumé, it allows them to work alongside and learn from industry professionals.

“It shows our students exactly how you do work in that professional field with people they have never met.”

In all, the show has 31 cast members and a crew of 22, showcasing Liberty’s student talent with 19 Irene Ryan Acting/Tech Award nominees participating, including actors Hughes, Jamie Cloutier (Wendy Darling) and Rachel Day (Tiger Lily) and stage manager Kaitlin Patterson. Several faculty members are involved with the project as well, four of which are recipients of the Kennedy Center Faculty Merit Award for Directing/Design, including Cooper, and theatre professor and Liberty alumnus Chris Nelson (also an Irene Ryan nominee), who plays the role of Captain Hook.

The original “Peter Pan” musical debuted on Broadway in 1954, starring Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard.

The musical is an adaptation of the stage play “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up” by J.M. Barrie, which he adapted several times and novelized (originally titled “Peter and Wendy” but later known as “Peter Pan”).

Cooper said she and the cast used research on Barrie’s life and its correlations to his characters as inspiration for the show’s character development.

She added that the play has to strike a balance between the childish elements like imagination and humor and grown-up elements such as fighting and death.

Cooper said “Peter Pan” has a unique message for both children and adults in the audience.

“I want children to take away this feeling that it’s OK to be a child, to dream about flying and fighting pirates and having pixie dust thrown about the room, and that imagination is a wonderful thing and nothing to be afraid of,” she said. “I want for adults to take away that there is a piece of the child we were still inside of us and that should bring us lots of joy. We need to be reminded of that joy and let it resurrect in our lives.”

On April 28, 2012 a small school in Lake County will prove that music programs are not only vital to a well-rounded education, but they can actually add to a school’s coffers. The Make the World Dance extravaganza, produced by Country Meadows Montessori School (CMMS), will showcase world music from the Philippines, India, Spain, and Italy as well as North and South Americas, interpreted by performers from ages 5 to 12.

At a time when most Illinois schools are cutting back on music programs to balance budgets and focus on standardized test preparation, Country Meadows is committed to investing in its musical curriculum. “I would never cut the music program,” said Principal Mary O’Young, “I’ve worked with students over the years, from severely handicapped through gifted, and have found that children require music as a part of their developmental foundation.”

Less analytical is Alex Cano, the school’s music director. “It is such a joy to watch the children develop skill and confidence in their singing and dancing. I can’t tell you how many times a child has said to me, ‘Miss Alex, this music makes my heart happy.’”

Always a crowd-pleaser, the CMMS spring fundraiser is expected to generate record ticket sales this year with its world music theme. Among the musical numbers is the Italian folk dance, tarantella, a frenetic series of steps traditionally performed by victims of tarantula bites to prevent them from succumbing to the poison.

Another routine of note is a modern take on the pre-Spanish tinikling dance of the Philippines. The hip-hop sounds of the Black Eyed Peas will play off the traditional beat of the bamboo poles as dancers step over and between them.

“Performances are the best part of music [studies] for me,” said Ben, a student in the upper elementary classroom.”

“Yeah. I never knew I could dance before. That makes me feel good,” added his classmate Joshua.

Another performer, Dalila chimed in to say she appreciates Ms. Cano’s approach to rhythm. “If she’s trying to teach us a certain beat, she’ll use words like pineapple, lemon drop, or watermelon.”

“I am just amazed at every aspect of these performances,” said Kim Mohiuddin, a parent of two pre-school students at CMMS. “From the children’s skill with singing and dancing to the detailed execution of the costumes, this goes well beyond what one would think a grade-school production could be. You can just see how much love and care go into putting it all together. Miss Alex and some of the other teachers and parents actually sew the costumes themselves!”

Indeed, a love of music seems to pervade the school with four of its teachers—Mrs. Horine, Ms. Harkaway, Mrs. Sullivan and Mr. Melka—coming from professional music backgrounds. Mr. Melka, a classically trained trumpet player, noted that dancing and playing music as a group has cultivated coordination, rhythm, and cooperation amongst his students. “And they’re really pretty good!” he adds.

“Of course the Make the World Dance performance will raise money,” said Ms. O’Young, “But the primary purpose is to give the children a chance to share their music with their parents, fellow students, and community members.”

Gayle Madeira and Sidney Grant, the 2011 USA Tango Champions, will perform Argentine tango on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Lafayette Grill for the 21st Annual Conference of the Object Relations Institute. The theme of the conference is “Voyages Into the Internal World: Three Perspectives on Self Sabotage” and includes papers by prominent scholars and members of the Object Relations Institute as well as tango performances by Sid and Gayle. Sid will also perform tango with Dr. Susan Kavaler-Adler, Founder and Executive Director of the Object Relations Institute and an avid tango dancer.

The theme for the conference is “Voyages into the Internal World: Archetyes, Internal Objects, and Internal Saboteurs, Three Ways of Looking at Self-sabotage (with Jungian, Kleinian, and Fairbairnian Perspectives).” Dr. Michael Adams will be offering the Jungian perspective, Dr. Jack Schwartz will be offering the Fairbairnian perspective, and Dr. Susan Kavaler-Adler will be offering the Kleinian (Melanie Klein) perspective. This conference proposes to offer three profound theoretical and clinical perspectives on the collisions, collusions, and polarizations in our internal psychic world, that impede personal and communal evolution and growth. Also known as Doctor Dance, Sidney’s career has spanned over two decades of dedication to the art of social dancing, specializing in Argentine Tango. Teaching young and old alike in a variety of settings (studios, schools, senior centers, and corporate/private events) Sid is in constant demand for his unique instruction and performance. His passion for partner dancing has enabled him to build a worldwide clientele, including choreographing hundreds of wedding couples’ first dances. He was valedictorian in the School of Journalism and Communication at Rutgers College, where he minored in Spanish.

Baron Cohen was dressed for his upcoming role as “The Dictator” to promote his new movie, and in an interview the actor spilled “ashes” from the urn he was touting on E! host Ryan Seacrest’s expensive tuxedo. Baron Cohen’s stunt earned him countless mentions on Twitter and Facebook as well as blog posts, videos, and other press coverage.

Joyce Chen of the New York Daily News reported that Baron Cohen arrived to the Oscars dressed as his character from his upcoming movie “The Dictator,” Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen. Baron Cohen spent his time on the red carpet in character, carrying around a golden urn that he claimed held the remains of his late friend Kim Jong Il. During an interview with E! host Ryan Seacrest, Baron Cohen spilled the contents of the urn onto Seacrest. Seacrest reportedly claimed that he had no involvement or knowledge of the publicity stunt whatsoever.

Baron Cohen was invited to attend the Oscars as a cast-member of “Hugo,” which was nominated for best picture this year. The Hollywood Reporter ran an article last week displaying the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ disapproval of Baron Cohen’s “Dictator” character being present on the red carpet. The article also reported that the Academy denied an online rumor that Baron Cohen’s tickets to the event were going to be revoked. An Academy spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter in reference to Baron Cohen’s supposed-plan to arrive to the Oscars in character, “We don’t think it’s appropriate, but his tickets haven’t been pulled.”

The 2012 Oscars is not the first awards show that Baron Cohen has used to publicly hype an upcoming movie. In 2006, Cohen attended the Toronto International Film Festival costumed as the character Borat and entered the festival atop a wagon pulled by what he claimed to be Kazakhstani peasant women. And in 2009, he was lowered from the ceiling at the MTV Video Music Awards dressed as the gay fashion reporter character of Bruno to promote his newest release, “Bruno.”

RoadFish.com feels that though Cohen’s red carpet antics were highly debatable and disliked by some, they were “an ingenious and dramatic way to call attention towards his upcoming movie. He did risk coming under fire but he fearlessly stuck with the character, and for that I give him a lot of credit.”

Ryan Seacrest stated in Monday morning’s “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” broadcast that he definitely did not know that Baron Cohen was going to involve him in his publicity stunt. Seacrest also claimed that his mother always advised him to bring two jackets to a red-carpet event as a precaution, so he was ready with a spare to change into after Sunday night’s ashes prank.
